Chinese charset character encoding

A character encoding consists of a code that pairs a set of characters with a set of something else, such as numbers or electrical pulses, in order to facilitate the storage of text in computers and the transmission of text through telecommunication networks.

If, instead of chinese ideograms you find the following characters, ??? or square, then you need to add Chinese as additional language setting to your computer system. For Windows, please follow the steps below.

1. Add Chinese to the language settings of your system. Go to Windows status bar and click "Start | Settings | Control Panel".
   Double click the icon "Regional Options".
2. On the "Regional Options" window, check the box before "Simplified Chinese" under section "Language settings for the system". then click the "Set Default..." button.
3. After clicking the OK button, Windows will prompt you to insert your Windows installation CD. Insert the CD-ROM and click OK button.
4. After Windows copied some files into your local drive, you will be prompted the following Window. Click the "Yes" button. You can then be prompted to restart Windows. Click Yes button to restart Windows.
5. After Windows is restarted, chinese language will be supported on your system.
